Onibaba(1964) in 100 Words or Less
Kaneto Shindo’s Onibaba is not exactly horrifying in the conventional sense(Mostly), but it will make you feel uneasy in other ways. Set in 14th century Japan, the story centers around an old woman and her daughter-in-law grinding to survive amidst civil war.
The film doesn’t hide its social commentary and uses it characters to prove a point. Tension between the two women can be interpreted between traditional against the modern way of living. Similarly, the war intervening in the characters’ is perhaps the true root of the “horror” they experience.
Onibaba is an intriguing yet concise “terror” worth watching.
