Maine Root Beer: Creating a gentle experience
Much like it its sibling cola (or really any bottled beverage), root beer gets more interesting outside of the biggest brands in the market. A&W, Mug, and Barq’s are easily the average person’s idea of root beer. While those large brands are a great entry point for a relatively niche drink, they lack for volume in taste (something I will review at a later date). Thankfully, other brewers have taken the time to craft and add a bit more substance in their root beers. In comes Main Root Beer, a company that prides itself in creating root beer based on the principles of sustainability and fair trade.
Along with those honorable intentions, Maine Root also asserts that its beverages are made with organic sugar came from Brazil rather than corn syrup. Moreover, Maine Root’s rustic and unassuming packing only adds to its alure as a positive alternative to other large soda producers. But as is the rule of these reviews, taste is king.
As noted from the picture above, Maine Root’s has a nice chestnut-esque color. It has a pleasant but faint sugar cane smell when inhaled. As for taste, Maine Root Beer is smooth on every single gulp and easy on the palate. Additionally, there is not a sugary aftertaste nor is there a sudden the usual rush of carbonation that one would expect from cola or other root beer. Profile-wise, there are some nice herbal and anise notes that can be savored at the end of each taste. The notes are not overtly strong but rather clean and brief. As a whole drinking Main Root Beer is a light, comfortable experience that is best enjoy cold while relaxing on a Sunday afternoon.
If one were to fault Maine Root Beer, it might be too gentle at times. The herbal notes are delicious but they are not strong enough to dictate the flow of taste that one may want. As it were, there is a sense of wanting more rather being a complete experience in itself. However, this fault can be overlooked since Main root still manages to be tasteful.
With everything taken into consideration, Maine Root Beer is worth buying whether it is your first time buying drinking root beer or your 15th. Main Root Beer aims to not be an explosion of taste, instead taking a slower more methodical approach.
